The origins of limousines
Limo hire is not a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination – in fact the terms “chauffeur” and “limousine” have been in common usage since the early seventeenth century.
The actual term “limousine” is of French origin, and emanated from the region which boasts the same name. The word came into common usage as a result of drivers in the area who were separated from their Masters whilst they travelled – the drivers in the cockpit with large hooded garments wrapped around them to guard against the elements, whilst their owners would be in a luxurious compartment at the back of the vehicle.
The first limousines were born during the mid eighteenth century with the inaugural version being the Sedan Chair. Ever since this development, limos have evolved into the magnificent structures which are exemplified by vehicles such as the hummer limo today.
Throughout recent history limos have become synonymous with perceptions of wealth, class and high sophistication which is part of the reason why the remain so popular in the present day.
Limosines are now utilised for an eclectic range of events ranging from birthday parties, graduations, hen nights and weddings – there are no real constraints as to where limos can be used. Vehicles can now even be made to bespoke requirements, and the features which can be included within the limo are bordering infinite!
