About Tetbury

Tetbury is a town and private church in the English Cotswolds region. It was probably located on the site of an ancient hilltop fort, built in 681 by Wessexley Ina as an Anglo-Saxon monastery. At the 2001 census, the church had 5,250 inhabitants, and at the 2011 census grew to 5,472. 

In the Middle Ages, Tetbury Cotswold became an important market for wool and yarn. Established in 1972, Tetbury Woolsack Races is an annual competition. Participants must carry a 60 lbs (27 kg) wool bag up and down a steep slope (Gumstool Hill). 

Famous buildings in the city include the 1655 church, the market building and the late 18th-century Gothic church, Mary and Mary Magdalene and many other city center locations, and its history can be traced. It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.
